Alanya Red Tower:
A Historical Symbol of Alanya from Seljuk to Present
When
Alanya is mentioned, one of the most important historical structures that comes to mind is undoubtedly the Red Tower. Rising right next to Alanya Harbor on the Mediterranean coast, this magnificent structure is considered one of the city's most important symbols due to its history, architecture, and location.
For
centuries, the Red Tower has been an inseparable part of Alanya's skyline and is one of the remarkable defensive structures from the Anatolian Seljuk period that has survived to this day.
History of the Red Tower
The
Red Tower was built in 1226 by the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan I. Alaeddin Keykubad. The architect of the structure is noted to be Ebu Ali Reha el Kettani, a master builder brought from Aleppo. The main purpose of the tower was to protect Alanya Harbor, the shipyard, and Alanya Castle from attacks that could come by sea.
During
Alaeddin Keykubad's reign, Alanya became an important port and administrative center for the Seljuks. After the Sultan captured Alanya Castle in the 13th century, significant construction activities were carried out in the region. The Red Tower is one of the most valuable structures that this period contributed to Alanya.
Why is it Called “Red Tower”?
The
red bricks used in the upper sections of the tower have given it a characteristic appearance and have led to its being referred to as the “Red Tower” over time. In the lower sections, cut limestone and different stone materials were used.
Today,
the tower, which rises right next to Alanya Harbor with its red tones, is one of the most recognizable historical structures of the city.
Architectural Features of the Red Tower
The
Red Tower is an impressive defensive structure with an octagonal plan. It has a diameter of approximately 29 meters and a height of 33 meters. While the exterior of the five-story building appears simple, its interior has a quite complex plan.
The
facades of the tower feature numerous arrow slits and openings used for defense. According to information provided by the Alanya Municipality, the structure contains 56 arrow slits, 22 defensive openings, and 6 chimneys.
These
features indicate that the Red Tower is not only an aesthetic structure but also a strong defensive point designed with the military needs of its time in mind.
A Structure Integrated with Alanya Castle and the Shipyard
One
of the elements that makes the Red Tower special is the whole it creates with the historical structures around it.
The
walls of Alanya Castle, which are approximately 6.5 kilometers long, start from the Red Tower, surrounding different points of the peninsula, and return to the vicinity of the Red Tower. The nearby historical Alanya Shipyard is one of the important legacies of the Seljuks' maritime activities in the Mediterranean.
For
this reason, the Red Tower can be considered one of the important parts of Alanya's defense and maritime system in the Middle Ages.
Today’s Red Tower
For
centuries, the Red Tower has protected Alanya Harbor and today it is a historical and cultural visit point. The structure is also used as an Ethnography Museum; there are museum arrangements on the entrance and first floors of the tower. The historical structure has also hosted various exhibitions and cultural-art events in the past.
The
area where the Red Tower is located is also one of the most striking tourist spots in the city, along with Alanya Harbor, the historical shipyard, castle walls, and surrounding walking areas.
The Symbol of Alanya: Red Tower
Standing
for about eight centuries, the Red Tower is not only a historical defensive structure but also one of the strongest symbols of Alanya's cultural identity.
Its
octagonal structure, which bears traces of Seljuk architecture, its red bricks, and its impressive location on the Mediterranean coast make the Red Tower one of the main historical structures that local and foreign tourists visiting Alanya should see.
Today,
the Red Tower, rising in the center of the modern tourism city of Alanya, continues to connect the city's centuries-old history with the present.
